Straight To Your Thighs Like The Cake You Ate

This is my personal blog. I'll have some posts about my weightloss as well as pictures. I'd love to help others who are going through a weight loss, or have done it and want to talk about the experience.

YES YES YES!

Room 226 at the Travelodge located at 9206 Macleod Trail South in Calgary, AB.

An extremely disgusting and disturbing thing from our trip to Calgary for the Spartan Race: Blood spatter on our hotel room walls! It was by far the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had.

I booked the room with a Dealfind coupon back in March of this year, it was to be a room with 1-Queen Sized bed. The room they put us in was definitely just a double bed, all the furniture in the suite was very aged, the TV didn’t work, one lamp was broken to the point where the shade was just dangling off the ‘skeleton’ for it. Erin and I joked around that this is where you take your mistress because you’re wife would never expect you to go into a room like this.
Erin also said she didn’t feel ‘right’ in the room and that something about the room is off. I said it’s only two night so it’s not a big problem, and apologized for booking this room because had I known this was what we’d get, we wouldn’t be staying there.

We saw a couple blood spots on the wall near the bed, and just assumed that someone had smacked a mosquito into the wall and didn’t wipe it after; I’m now thinking the cleaners just missed a couple spots when they cleaned up other spatter.

The first night we both couldn’t sleep too well, but tried the best we could. We brushed our teeth but never used the washroom so the door was never closed. In the morning of the 18th Erin took a shower, and when she got out of the shower she told me I had to see something, in a very scared sounding tone.

She tried to convince herself it wasn’t blood, but the second I saw it and said that it’s definitely blood spatter we freaked out. I’ve studied blood spatter, patterns, smears, and have seen numerous crime-scene photos, there was no question what it was. Erin had wet a toilet paper sheet and tried wiping it just to triple check that it’s blood, and to no surprise it turned red and just smeared. The spatter started at about my elbows and went to the ceiling. We packed our bags and left the room without any hesitation.

Erin was pretty shaken from what we just saw so she went and sat in the car while I spoke with the hotel staff. When I told the gentleman what we found and said we wanted a new room, I also showed him the picture. He suggested that it could be paint, which I said there’s no way it was paint and told him it turns red if it’s wet. He apologized and he did give us a new room, thankfully.

After the race we went to the new room, and it actually was a nice room. There was a Queen bed(like the booking was for), the lights weren’t broken, there was a new tv that worked, the walls were clean, plus the furniture and bedding seemed newer too.

Erin barely slept the night before so she tried to have a nap, but couldn’t because she still felt uncomfortable. We hungout in the room for maybe 2 hours before I suggested that we just drive home that night. Erin said she was thinking that the whole time but didn’t want to cut our trip short. My thoughts were that if I was still uncomfortable, and I’m used to seeing stuff like that; that it must be REALLY bad for Erin, who has anxiety problems to begin with. So we ended our trip to Calgary a day and a half earlier than planned but at least we were able to sleep that night!

Spartan Race was a blast! The course seemed way better than last years, and from talking to other Spartans who competed last year it definitely was. I’ll be going back in 2013 to compete with my girlfriend, and we’re also rallying up some friends for a team.
The race was very hilly and did a number on my calfs, but what a great sense of achievement there was. I was aiming to be done in 50-60mins and finished in around 47 minutes or so
I messed up on 3 of the obstacles, so I ended up doing 75 burpees in the race. The reason being that for any obstacle you mess up you have to do 25 burpees. First one was a balance beam walking thing, I fell off that. Second was a wall-shuffle board, and the pegs were too far apart for me so I fell off that too. And third was the spear throw, I was so exhausted my spear went sideways.

So for 2013, I’ve got another Spartan Race, and a Tough Mudder planned!

In 2005, Sgt. Noah Galloway was in Iraq when a roadside bomb attack nearly killed him. He lost his left arm above the elbow, his left leg above the knee, injuries to his face and jaw and spent weeks in the hospital fighting for his life.He has set out to redefine how amputees recover, train, and even compete in endurance challenges. and redefining what is possible for disabled veterans. He is

Spartan Race this weekend!

I’m so excited for this. Checking the Spartan Race Facebook page is great motivation and just builds my excitement even more. My girlfriend is coming with me and will be cheering me on, and my mom said she’s also going to be making the drive to Calgary to cheer me on.

I watched videos of 2011’s Calgary Spartan Race and honestly I hope it’s a little more muddy and difficult. I’ve been following various Spartan Races and have seen some of the obstacles on other courses and REALLY hope they’ve improved the course from last year.

For next year I’m aiming for the Tough Mudder, which will be having it’s first Calgary event. I signed up for the newsletter so I’ll let you guys know once registration is open

We had Chi Chi for Canada Day weekend and it was great! Ampersand and Cheech seem to actually like each other quite a bit. We took them to the Terwillegar Dog Park a couple times, and I actually like the Terwillegar one more than the Sherwood Park one. The river runs beside the trails, the trails are big, and pretty long. My first time there I saw a lot of people cross-country running and riding bikes on the trails too so I decided to do a couple runs down the trails to train for the Spartan Race.Canada Day Weekend my dad also gave us a iPad for free because he won it (third time he’s won an iPad) and the other one he owned was better. Since then Erin and I have been geeking out hardcore with it. I HAD to jailbreak it because I feel so restricted without a jailbroken one; we’ve both been playing a lot of “Plague, Inc”.Also, I got GTA3 on it and I feel like GTA3 actually looks WAY better on my iPad than it ever did on my PS2. The load times are obviously significantly better too. As a kid I put so much time into GTA3 though so everytime I play it I have so much nostalgia

I took Ampersand to the Sherwood Park off-leash park with my brothers pug, Chi-Chi. The dog park is MASSIVE, they have very nice trails to go through with your dog, and all the other dogs and dog owners we’ve met have been very friendly.Ampersand and Chi-Chi got along really good, played fetch together and then we walked the trails. Both of them were exhausted, but looked extremely happy in the backseat on the way home so I felt like I HAD to snap a picture

We adopted a puppy from the Edmonton SPCA! We’ve named her Ampersand, after the monkey in Y: The Last Man, and she’s been amazing the first couple of days. We fell in love with her when we went into her room at the SPCA. I love her little underbite, and I find her so ugly it’s cute

The SPCA said she’s a Cairn Terrier, we feel like she might be mixed with a pug or an Affenpinscher though. Her first checkup went great, only thing worth noting being that the vet gave us a cone to put on her because she was licking around her stitches.

I ordered this from an artist named Tessa Meier off Etsy. I gave her 4 pictures of us and requested an abandoned city as the background and she sent this to me! We are blown away and can’t wait to hang it up at the front door

Healthy plans for the summer

So the first summer of/during my weightloss I did the triathlon and felt great. Last summer I wanted to just relax because it was after my first year of school, I had stress at home and was changing jobs.

This summer it’s still my break time from school and I’m still working FT so if anything I’m more busy, even though the situation has changed there’s still some home stress (hopefully will be gone within a month when my girlfriend and I move) but figured I should stop making up all these excuses.

A coworker was telling me about all the different races he was considering and when he was telling me about Spartan Races I was really interested. So I’ve registered for a Spartan Race and then my buddy injured his leg so he’s out for the season!

I’m still very excited to do this race, the one closest to my city is a Spartan Sprint so it’s just 5km, but it’s pretty much like a 5km Obstacle Course! Check out their website for more info.

I also then started looking other races that are similar in my area, there’s not a whole lot for this year but I think next year I may try going to Squamish for the 10km Spartan Race, and I want to give the Tough Mudder a try. 2013 will be the first Tough Mudder event in my area too!

Other plans for me include starting to cycle to work, and luckily my job gets me pretty active. So, what are your plans for the summer?

I’ve been slow on the updates lately with life picking up but will try to be better. I’ve moved in with my amazing girlfriend, it’s much easier sticking to a healthier diet when there’s someone else that you’re always accountable to. We’re heading to the Dominican in December for my brothers wedding and both want to trim down a bit before going!
